A way to tame the river of news … ReFilter

by Juned on September 4th, 2007

A web feed even at its most focused state will contain a number of news or posts that you may or may not need. I guess one could characterize the Internet and the Web as a big river of information rushing by and webfeeds as creeks we make to tap the flow of information that rushes by. And even at the creek level there still are some bits of information we may need or not. If these information, post or articles were individually to take the form of fishes you will find catching them by hand would be fun but time consuming. You would probably need a net of some kind. And then to get a particular type of fish or post/article you would need a net of that would allow information er fish you do not want pass by and those that you indeed want get caught. A net made of different sized holes would be practical. In terms of fishing the web feed a filter would be of great use … enter … ReFilter.

ReFilter is a free RSS filter developed by Sam. It allows you to filter a feed with a search string. This could be anything from a single word to a combination of words, phrases and boolean logic commands. ReFilter provides a web page explaining how to what the and how to use the different search strings here.

ReFilter is easy to use just paste in the feed and add the search string. And another advantage to using ReFilter is that you can narrow the search further by using Boolean Terms. A brief review of the different search strings, also available on ReFilter, will be a worthwhile endeavor for the user. Not only will it allow the ReFilter user to make more effective use of his feeds but will also empower the user to search more effectively.
