Asus EEE and RSS Readers
After using the Asus EEE for a couple of weeks I am still impressed with what one can do with it. The Asus EEE and its bretheren will probably be one of the thing to watch in 2008. I like all of it … save for the lack RSS reader. Fortunately, several applications have been developed and re-surfaced – RSS Readers.
So what are the options available?
Now the list of RSS Readers here is not complete nor exhaustive. It is a set of RSS Readers so far that I encountered that could work for the EEE.
I. On-line RSS Readers:
On-line readers are quite practical. You can move from computer to computer, from Windows to Mac to Linux and you do not have to change anything - no fuss. And there are a number of readers to choose from. Google Reader, Bloglines, Netvibes, Yahoo, Pageflakes, Newsgator and others are easy to locate and sign-up. Always have though a copy of your updated OPML. You never know when you have to set-up another account.
Flock is a browser that has built-in capabilites that allows you to simultaneously log in to several socialmedia networks. share files, alert service, blog and has a built in RSS Reader.
Mozilla which is the default reader of the EEE has an RSS Reader.
II. Desktop Based Readers -
RSS Owl is a multi-platform RSS Reader and requires a working copy of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), preferably 1.4.2 or 1.5.x installed in order to run. Multi-platform means you can download a version for Windows, Mac OS X, linux and Solaris.
Akragator is already installed in the Asus EEE. The application can be accessed through the command line or the Advance Mode of Asus.
QuickRSS open format and can be download here.
III.Flash-Based RSS Readers -
This is interesting because you run the application from a Flash Drive. Hence, One can carry it anywhere and more apparently for EEE users it will not eat up memory. So far I have only located on such Reader that states it will operate under Linux. And it is NewsFeed.
There seems to be many options available. And it does it get a little bit confusing as one searches the Web and the forums- I use (EEEUser.com and EEE Philippines)for a proper RSS Reader. They seem to be great but the one that has the advantage given the memory space available for EEE is the on-line readers and flash-based reader.
