Bloglines, great service but…

by Vincent on January 3rd, 2006

Bloglines plumberBloglines is a great service and I think many of you will agree. But lately there has been more and more downtime. Today was also one of those days, they relocated to a new data center or something. I know this is needed and I know you can´t expect too much of a free service… but I do hope this isnt gonna happen more often. I might want to pay a little amount of money if that guarantees that I can read my feeds online. What do you think? How much can you expect of a free service? I also once read somewhere that Bloglines said it would always be free, does anybody know more about this?

Oh, and on a positive note: everytime Bloglines is down you could say that the amount of RSS users is growing, that´s good news!

I think we should expect a better service from Bloglines, even if it is a free service. There are certain aspects of the service eg. support that has to be limited because it’s free - but when it comes to availability, they have to do a much better job.

And from Bloglines perspective this is just as important. If they want to build a strong and loyal customer base, they must get this right. Otherwise, all it will take is another service with feature parity (which isn’t really there today) for people to switch e.g. I keep checking Newsgator, but it lacks a few features that I really love with Bloglines, but when/if Newsgator adds those same features and Bloglines goes down again, it’s not going to take much to persuade me (and presumably many others) to move.

I would have been perfectly happy with bloglines were it not for the fact that I feel it’s a poor service. I don’t know if I’m too picky, but I expect more, even from a free service.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not just a hater. I’m still yet to find the perfect aggregator. Can anyone help?
