Food for thought: On Aggregating RSS feeds

by Juned on March 28th, 2008

When you see a good idea or an important discussion you mention it. I came across this post, What’s acceptable when aggregating RSS feeds?, at aidanf.net. The post tells us of debate that involved Damien Mulley, Maman Poulet and Something.ie about aggregating RSS feeds. By the preceding links all point to posts debating on the issue.

The debate between the three is interesting because in a sense its a case of what a blogger or bloggers feel about their content being syndicated. The debate though only figures as a introduction to the actual topic of the post. And it is what is and what is not good RSS aggregating practices.

It is an interesting read and very timely because: (i) Aggregating of RSS feeds have been on the irise (to say the least) and (ii) some web publishers, bloggers and websites, have been placing terms of use in their RSS feeds.

Aiden tackles the different ways RSS is aggregated and how these are considered bad and good. He tackles nearly issue concerning aggregating The post is very informative and important. It is a worth while read. But at the end of the day one has to make a stand or have an opinion on what is proper and improper of aggregating RSS feeds.

One simple rule of thumb: Do not pass the content of the RSS feed as your own and always cite the source of the RSS feed.
