Google Reader and Netvibes

by Juned on July 2nd, 2007

I have two computers - one at my office and one at home. The first thing and last thing in the office is to open and close the computer. And the first thing and last thing is the house that I do is to open and close the computer. Ah the exciting life I live! Anyway to interest you more between those two computer I normally use only one or rather two newsreaders - IGoogle and Google Reader. The reason is that they are readily available to me: I open the computer, log into the net and go to IGoogle (formerly known as the Personalized Web Page). There is an assortment of widgets and RSS feeds and IGoogle allows you at a glance of nearly all the information you subscribed to. A widget for the Google Reader can also be added. So I was totally dependent on IGoogle and Netvibes.

Netvibes, like IGoogle, is quite user-friendly. And the different rss feeds, search engines, nearly all types of email can be arranged and accessed according to one’s wishes. At least now I had my back up. I was still getting a lot of other news readers but these were the two I often used. And both were effectively able to deliver the content needed by their user. Both had their strong points and weak points. What were they ?

1. Google Reader enables its user to star an article for retrieval later. So far Netvibes does not have this.

2. Google Reader enables its user to share an article. So far Netvibes does not have this as well.

3. On the other hand Netvibes can now play podcasts. And so far Google does not have this feature.

So the battle still continues and as other challengers enter the fray.
