Newser: machine and human collaboration
It is called value-added and that is what High Beam Reseacrh’s Newser is offering. A service that provides Online News scanned from the Web by both human and machine aggregation, which is further spiced up by providing summaries bundled with photos, videos, audio and links to the original stories.
Information found at Newser About Page reveals the process involved in the creation of a Newser article:
Newser does the reading for you. Newser selects the day’s most important and most talked about stories from the 100 top news sources.
In succinct, lively summaries, Newser’s editors distill articles and opinion pieces, telling you what you need to know, what you want to know, and where to go for the best coverage.
You can’t follow 100 news sources, but we can follow them for you.Newser is the first online news service to fully leverage the Web and is creating the first major news brand native to that medium.[Source]
Also, in the same About Page you will also see how the articles are selected:
Newser’s story selection is based on a proprietary formula that measures the ubiquity of coverage by the top-ranked 100 English-language news sites; the prominence with which those sites feature the stories; and the popularity of a given story with readers; and overlooked points of view, angles and scoops uncovered by our editors.[Source]
And that was the machine aggregation part of the service and how about the human part? Well, also found in the About page is a short description of what the editors do:
Newser is staffed with editors who scan the Web continuously and become experts in ongoing stories. They’re familiar with the background, sources, reporters, and points of view on each. They make it easy for you—by finding the best coverage, highlighting the most important information, and distilling it efficiently.[Source]
Newser was created as an extension of its creator’s online information business and it is available for free, although it does have some advertisements. The other services of the company include a news and information subscription service called Highbeam Library and Highbeam Encyclopedia, an ad-supported and free service that contains around 100,000 reference essays and is augmented by around 3 million free magazine and newspaper articles.
