Speaking of Information Overload…

by Cathy on January 11th, 2007

Another problem discovered. I posted about not being able to reply to comments. The culprit/savior, it seems, is Askismet. Akismet is a very valuable WordPress plug-in to catch spam. Unfortunately, it thinks I am a spammer! A confession is in order here - I’ve never spammed anyone in my entire life! Flamed? Maybe. But never spam.

I have found other ‘real’ people in my Akismet queue too so if you leave a comment and I haven’t posted it within 24 hours, please e-mail me. I am not ignoring you, I just can’t find you. For example - since yesterday evening, 1,439 comments went to Akismet. That would be wonderful if valid comments didn’t go there too. I just went through 29 pages of smutty comments, trying to find a valid one. Hmmm…can quickly scrolling through 29 pages of text cause seizures? Perhaps there should be a seizure warning at the top of each Akismet page!

I really do embrace new technology and Akismet is one thing I whole-heartedly support but, gosh darn it, I AM NOT A SPAMMER!

Here’s an example of how I embrace new technology. Back in the day, when my company decided to go from DOS to Windows I was worried. When the fateful day arrived and the tech came to my office to put Windows on my machine, I threw myself on it and wouldn’t let him touch it! Of course, he won and I had Windows whether I wanted it or not. After a few years, I ‘quickly’ embraced Windows and since then have ‘promptly’ forgotten most of what I knew about DOS.

So - that is my information overload. What’s yours?

I have had the exact same things happening to me with Akismet. I am being picked up on some sites as a spammer for now reason. Really sucks on a site where your comments can lead to traffic but they couldn’t find your comment even if they wanted to.

Kris, you’ll be happy to know that my Akismet does not think you are a spammer! Now - to get this reply to display I’ll have to submit it, then go to my OWN Akismet queue and de-spam MYSELF!

Your last comment is the exact reason I really look through the Akismet queue. I don’t want to lose anyone - you are all valuable to me. Thanks for the comments.
