Tinkering with Tiinker

by Juned on February 11th, 2008

Tiinker is a news aggregator that uses an algorithm to filter and screen news for you. The software uses the choice of articles as template for your filter. Tiinker was developed by the Sydney, Australia-based start up Deep Grey and the application was designed intentionally for one purpose:

We want to bring the power of modern artificial intelligence techniques to bear on services for everyday people — no technical knowledge required. We built tiinker to help you (and us) sort through the massive amount of information published online every day, so people can spend more time reading and learning about things they find interesting, and less time sifting out the chaff.[Source]

And its easy to use. You have to register first though. A click on the thumb’s up or down icon will tell Tiinker whether you like the article or not. Then this quuckly factored in your personal algorithm. I would think this allows for a simple but dynamic updating of your filter.

Tiinker is made up of four main pages each designed for the user to:

View and select articles - MY ARTICLES
See most viewed articles - POPULAR
Search for articles - SEARCH
View articles that you recently tagged or view - HISTORY
View articles that one saved for later viewing - SCRAPBOOK

I just wonder what is the breadth and scope of their news sources is: How many newspapers or media companies do they fish in. How many?

Oh! And they also have a blog.
