by Juned on February 7th, 2008

Maria Mitchell, life, letters and journals is the millionth book put on-line by the University of Michigan. The book is about the life of 19th century American Astronomer Maria Mitchell.

What does this mean?

Digitized materials are made available publicly via the Mirlyn library catalog and MBooks. MBooks provides full text of works that are in the public domain, creating new ways for users to search and access U-M Library content. Materials that are currently in copyright are available for searching on-line, allowing users to assess the contents of a book before deciding whether to purchase it or borrow it from the library.[Source]

UM prepared an interesting slide that shows this but in a nutshell the millionth book means:

One million = 361,441,145 pages
One million = 42 terabytes
One million = 750 tons
One million = 146 miles…

Most of the books scanned by the university were done in partnership with Google , Michigan Digitization Project. You can check out the digititization process pdf here.

The UM Library has around 7.1 million books in its collection. This means more to come and this is good or good?
