Why are subscriber numbers important?
The recent story about subscribers numbers brings, up a number of questions concerning subscriber count (how they are counted and why the discrepancies. But why all the hubbub over the number of subscribers? Is it an issue of popularly, marketing, on-line reputation, or something more?
It might be all of the above mentioned reasons, but something more. And the something more is interesting. In the world of newspaper and magazine publishing there such a thing as readership statistics and readership surveys are widely used. These are statistical that are done once or at the most twice a year. These studies describe the performance in terms of user experience, subscription and other descriptives each publication and this is used by the same publications, depending on their performance, to sell their newspaper and magazines to the advertisers.
The more subscriptions and the more superlative experience the better sell of the newspaper and magazine to the advertisers.
Subscriber counts are similar to readership statistics and readership surveys in that although they are figures all are used to market and sell the website, blog, newspaper and magazine.
I wonder if it would be any help if there were a group or a company that could independently track these statistics?
